Wandering the Charming Streets of Mysuru: A Walk Through Heritage and Hidden Gems

There’s something magical about discovering a city on foot — the slow rhythm, the unnoticed alleys, the smell of fresh dosas wafting through the air, and the stories embedded in old walls. Mysuru (formerly Mysore) welcomed me with that exact charm, and I decided to ditch cabs and autos to let my legs guide the way through its vibrant streets.

From colonial architecture to local flavors, this walking journey through the cultural capital of Karnataka became more than just sightseeing — it became a personal connection with the soul of the city.

Starting Point: Devaraja Market

My walk began in the heart of the city — Devaraja Market, a bustling paradise of colors, fragrances, and sounds. Rows of flower garlands, fresh fruits, incense sticks, kumkum powders, and handwoven baskets greeted me with a warm sensory overload. The market, with its vintage charm, has stood strong since the era of the Wodeyars, and walking through it feels like stepping into a living museum.

I spent nearly an hour here, chatting with vendors, clicking photos of the intricate flower arrangements, and sampling slices of pineapple dusted with chili powder.

Walking Towards Heritage: Mysore Palace

From the market, I strolled towards Mysore Palace — just a short walk away. The roads are well-maintained, shaded with trees, and lined with heritage-style buildings. Along the way, I noticed street vendors selling jasmine garlands, traditional toys, and Mysore silk stoles.

Standing in front of the palace, its grandeur took my breath away. Even without entering, the exterior — with its Indo-Saracenic architecture, ornate gates, and perfectly symmetrical domes — is worth admiring. The sun setting behind it painted the sky in warm oranges, casting a golden glow on the domes.

Evening Calm at Chamarajendra Circle

After soaking in the palace, I walked a little further to Chamarajendra Circle, a popular junction that offers a view of the palace from a unique angle. With the statue of Chamaraja Wodeyar standing regally under a domed pavilion, this spot offered a moment of reflection — the noise around me faded as I watched the world go by.

Café-hopping along the way, I grabbed a strong filter coffee from a small, nondescript outlet that served it in steel tumblers — the real Mysuru way.

A Detour Into Art: Jaganmohan Palace

Taking a slight detour from my original plan, I followed a quiet lane to reach Jaganmohan Palace, which now houses the Jayachamarajendra Art Gallery. The place isn’t loud or flashy, but it’s filled with royal paintings, artifacts, and stories of a bygone era. A friendly security guard gave me a brief history, adding a personal touch to my visit.

Into the Spiritual Space: Chamundi Hills Viewpoint

I didn’t climb the hills that day, but on my walk around the outskirts of the city center, I stumbled upon a viewpoint that offered a distant view of Chamundi Hills. The dusk light, distant temple tower, and fading honks of the city below made it a serene stop.

Final Stop: Karanji Lake Pathway

Though slightly away from the central core, I stretched my walk to reach Karanji Lake, taking lanes that curved through residential neighborhoods filled with bougainvillea-covered fences and children playing cricket.

Karanji Lake’s walking trail was the perfect cool-down. With birds chirping, ducks paddling, and walkers exchanging friendly smiles, it felt like Mysuru whispering a soft goodbye.

Closing Thoughts

Walking the streets of Mysuru is more than just visiting attractions — it's about experiencing life at its own pace. The blend of royalty, culture, street food, and local warmth made this walk unforgettable. I didn’t need a tour guide or a fixed plan. Mysuru unfolded its layers one street at a time, making me feel at home in its history and humble beauty.

If you're ever in this beautiful city, skip the cab — just walk. Let Mysuru show you its soul.
