3 Hidden Forts Around Matheran Worth Exploring
Most people visit Matheran for its viewpoints, forest trails, toy train rides, and cool weather. But while exploring the hills around Matheran, I slowly discovered another side of the region that made the experience even more interesting — the old forts hidden across the Sahyadri landscape.
Some of these forts are not directly inside Matheran itself, but their presence can be felt from many viewpoints and trekking routes around the hill station.
The Hills Around Matheran Felt Endless
One thing I loved about Matheran was how connected it felt to the surrounding mountains.
The landscape stretches far beyond the town, creating a feeling of endless wilderness. Every viewpoint seemed to offer a different perspective of the Western Ghats and the deep valleys below.
At times, the hills appeared rugged and powerful, while at other moments they looked soft and peaceful beneath the clouds.
Early in the morning, mist slowly drifted across the mountains, partially hiding and revealing the scenery. The changing light throughout the day gave the landscape a completely different character every few hours.
Looking at the distant forts perched on hilltops, it was easy to imagine the history and stories connected to them. Those views made me curious about the forts hidden beyond the forests and cliffs.
Peb Fort Looked Wild and Adventurous
Peb Fort, also known as Vikatgad, became one of the most interesting forts I explored near Matheran.
From higher points, the views of the valleys and nearby hills looked incredible, especially during cloudy weather.
The fort ruins may not be massive, but the overall trekking experience made the place memorable.
Prabalgad Dominated the Landscape
From certain viewpoints around Matheran, Prabalgad stood out clearly in the distance.
The Sahyadri region has a unique way of blending history and nature together. Ancient forts suddenly appear between layers of green mountains, making the entire area feel historic and mysterious at the same time.
Irshalgad Added Character to the Hills
Another structure that caught my attention was Irshalgad. Its sharp rocky pinnacle looked very different compared to regular hill forts.
The rugged appearance of the fort made the surrounding landscapes feel even more dramatic. Places like this reminded me how rich Maharashtra’s trekking culture really is.
The Weather Made Everything Better
One thing that made these fort views special was the weather around Matheran.
The weather seemed to change every few minutes, giving the landscape a different look throughout the day.
At times, entire mountain ranges would disappear behind thick fog and then slowly reappear again. Watching the mist drift across the valleys created a peaceful and almost dreamlike atmosphere.
Some viewpoints offered clear panoramic views one moment and were completely covered by clouds the next. The shifting light also transformed the scenery, making the hills look dramatic and vibrant.
Even the forests felt more alive as the cool air carried the scent of wet soil and greenery. That changing atmosphere made even simple walks around Matheran feel exciting.
It was the kind of weather that encouraged me to slow down, pause often, and simply enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.
More Than Just a Hill Station
Before visiting Matheran, I mostly imagined it as a quiet hill station with viewpoints and nature walks. But after spending time there, I realized the surrounding region has much more depth.
Every day seemed to offer an opportunity to explore something beyond the usual tourist spots.
Whether it was hiking towards a fort, discovering a new viewpoint, or walking through forest paths, there was always something interesting to experience.
The rugged terrain and historical sites added a sense of adventure that complemented the peaceful atmosphere of the hill station.
At the same time, the absence of heavy traffic and the slower pace of life made the experience feel relaxing.
This combination of nature, history, and outdoor exploration gave Matheran a unique character. It became more than just a relaxing destination.
It turned into a place where scenic beauty and adventure came together in a way that left a lasting impression on me.
Why These Forts Stayed in My Memory
What I enjoyed most was not only reaching the forts themselves but also seeing them appear naturally between the hills while exploring Matheran.
Even now, when I think about Matheran, I remember not only the viewpoints but also the hidden forts quietly standing across the hills around it.
